Get Some Fifth Wheel Tips To Make Your Trip Easier

If you are thinking about getting a camper and taking out family out and about to enjoy the great outdoors, you have a lot of choices. One of them is to use a fifth wheel. A fifth wheel is a kind of camper that is designed to be pulled along behind your truck:

The Fifth Wheel Camper

These campers can either be hitched to a trailer hitch on the back of your truck, or you can use a hitch that goes in the bed of your pick-up. There are a lot of reasons for using one of those trailer hitches. One is that the camper you can haul is bigger.

Some of the weight goes over your truck bed, spreading it out better. It also allows you to have a bi-level trailer, generally with a loft room that goes over the truck bed. If you are going to be towing your fifth wheel for the first time, there are some tips that will make it easier for you.

Fifth Wheel Towing Tips

1. Get Plenty of Practice: Before you start driving down the road, you want to get a lot of practice. That includes practicing hitching and unhitching your camper. You want to make sure that you know how to do it right and how to fix any problems. Practicing will also let you turn the actions into something you can do automatically when you are tired or the weather is bad.

You also need to practice driving. The weight of your truck is going to change, so the way it handles is going to change. It will take you longer to stop and to speed up. You need to know those differences so that you can be safe on your trip. Backing up is going to be different because you can't see everything going on. Practice by having someone guide you to where you need to go.

2. Plan Your Route: You might want to know what planning your trip has to do with towing your camper. Well, when you have a trailer, it isn't as easy to get into gas stations or up hills as it would be when you weren't towing anything. So you need to look at where you are going to see if any of the roads that you want to drive on are going to be too steep or curvy for you to negotiate, especially if you are towing your trailer for the first time. You can also figure out which gas stations will work best for you. You can do that online using various map sites, or you can download an app to your smart device and do it that way.

Getting out and camping with your family can be a lot of fun. A fifth wheel camper can make that much easier. Just make sure that you take the time to practice and plan before you go. To learn more, contact a company like Major Tire & Hitch Inc. with any questions you have.
